Hunter Kelly was born on Valentine's Day which was also Jim's birthday. After a few months, Hunter began having problems breathing and after misdiagnosing the disease as colic, Hunter continued to get worse. He began having problems moving and progressing through milestones. After several tests, Hunter was correctly diagnosed as Krabbe disease.
Hunter was only supposed to live up to 14 months, but fought and made it over 8 years. Jill Kelly talks about Hunter's will to live in spite of his disease. He did not have the ability to speak, walk, or move very much on his own. He learned to communicate by blinking his eyes and enjoyed playing with his older sister and eventually his younger sister, Cam.
Hunter's illness brought Jill to desperation and a search for God. She sought God for Hunter's healing even though she didn't know anything about God really. She talks about several church experiences where she and her family and friends took Hunter to healing services only to feel embarrassed, hurt, and disillusioned. Jim Kelly took an opposite journey than Jill. While Jill started trying to turn to God, Jim was angry at God and life in general.
As Hunter continued growing older and Jill continued to open herself to Christ through an uncle who was born again and other friends, Jill began to see Hunter's illness as an opportunity to find God. Hunter was surviving for her and her love and in his suffering, he was showing his love for his mother and family without words.
Hunter would eventually pass away at Jill's mother's home after the Kelly's made plans for Hunter to spend the night with the grandparents for the night. Due to confusion over which hospital Hunter was being rushed to, Jim actually went to the wrong hospital 45 mins away from the hospital Hunter was rushed to. By the time Jim made it to the right hospital, Hunter had passed and Jim missed it.
After Hunter passed, Jim became more distant and Jill sunk into depression. Eventually though Jill's mother asked to speak to Jim. God had laid some things on her heart to speak to him about. Simultaneously, God was trying to work on Jim's heart. Jim went to his pastor's office and gave himself to the Lord and became a born again believer. After talking to Jill and coming clean about his secret life, God began to really work in the couple and their family.
In the book, Jill Kelly offers up a simple explanation for the peace and salvation her family has experienced. Plain and simple, Jill says it was because of Hunter. This was a great book and a great story of redemption and miracles through adversity and faithfulness.
