It was after his first season with the Bills that I started learning a lot of things about him. I didn't know that he was a Christian. I definitely admired that. I also didn't know anything about his family. That all changed though when Spielman announced he was taking a year off from football to be with his wife Stefanie who was diagnosed with breast cancer. This book is about that story with stories from their early years sprinkled into it.
Together, the Spielman's walked through 12 years of fighting cancer. Stefanie was such a fighter that she started an awareness campaign and fund to fight breast cancer. The organization hosts award ceremonies, 5k races, dinners, cruises, and other fundraising ventures to try and find a cure for cancer. Her testimony of courage and faith in the face of death left me in tears as she held to her faith in Christ and enjoyed everything about life. Reading how the couple's alma mater Ohio St. got personally involved has definitely put a soft spot in my heart for the Buckeyes as well! Today on the Ohio St. campus, there is a special building of the hospital named after Stefanie for all of her work.
This book was tremendous. If you're a sports fan, you'll love it. If you're a fan of love and life, you'll love it. If you've ever lost someone to cancer, the book will no doubt be riveting, but it will also provide healing and strength. I'd recommend it to anyone to read. You won't regret it. The Spielman's faith and perseverance are inspirations and power to those that read it.
