I got to sit with another pastor and his wife from north GA and three Gideons. The whole preface of the dinner was to show pastors appreciation for allowing the Gideons to come into the churches from time to time to raise funds. The program showed us exactly where these Bibles go and it's not just America. The Gideons are worldwide. In the country of India, there are some 2500 Gideons preaching the Gospel of Christ. In Russia and the Ukraine there are several hundred Gideons passing out Bibles and sharing the Gospel. Testimony after testimony was given of how hungry those in other countries are for the Gospel message.
A testimony was given by Danny Croce, a once amateur boxer outside of Boston. Danny found himself incarcerated for vehicular manslaughter of a police officer due to driving under the influence. The officer happened to be a family friend. While in jail, Danny was given a Gideon New Testament and began to read it. After talking with the chaplain, Danny went back to his cell and gave his life to Christ. When he got out, he went to Bible college and got his BA in Bible Theology and is now the chaplain at the same jail he was once a prisoner in. His testimony was amazing.
One of the Gideons we sat with was named Ann or as I called her throughout the night, "Mrs. Ann." She was probably in her 70's at least. Technically speaking, Mrs. Ann is not a Gideon. Only men can be Gideons, yet they can serve with their husbands. Mrs. Ann was the sweetest lady. She said that her and her husband had joined the Gideons in 1973. They both thought they would just join and help with Bible distribution but they quickly became very involved. They ended up as secretary of their region. Shortly after they were promoted to vice president. And before it was all said and done, Mrs. Ann's husband became president of a region. Mrs. Ann talked about how much joy it brought them and how they just love the Gideon organization. All the talk about Mrs. Ann's husband was fantastic but he wasn't there. As we talked further, she told me her husband had passed away about six years ago. She said she was still doing the Gideon work however in honor of him and their treasured time together. What a lady and what a story!
The amazing thing about the Gideons is that it only takes $1.35 to make a small testament to give out. It only takes $5 to make a full Bible to put in hotels, prisons, and other places. Tomorrow night, we will have one of our own Gideons in service with us and he'll tell us exactly what God is doing around the world and locally. I ask everyone that belongs to Free Point and those who don't (yet), to be with us Sunday night for this very special night. I'm asking everyone to pray about what the Lord would have you give. I'm asking everyone to at least give $2 in our offering that night. That will cover a small testament for a child somewhere in America or around the world. If $2 is too little, great! Give $5 and give somebody the gift of a large whole Bible. My goal is to see Free Point be responsible for at least 100 Bibles going out to reach the lost. Think about it for a minute. Would you rather spend $5 on a Wendy's #1 Single Combo or $5 on a soul being saved? For me the choice is easy.
